Our team of builders and architects enjoyed the chance to flex their creative genius with the Minimal Hillside Home. The direction of the slope presented a challenge in orienting the residence to take advantage of the view and maximise solar access. The house plans also had to incorporate the clients’ wish for a single level pavilion-style house with concrete floors.

The solution was to level the site, incorporating the retaining wall and fill as part of the building construction. The retaining wall supports the suspended concrete floor, while the rear of the house is raised on steel posts and steel beams.

The Topic Builders & Architects team developed a T-shaped floor plan, providing privacy from the uphill neighbours. The unique house plan is specifically designed to maximise solar access to the living rooms, take advantage of the view and separate the master bedroom from the main dwelling.

The layout also provides a large outdoor entertaining area that is sheltered from the prevailing winds. This area is directly accessed and can be supervised from the kitchen and living rooms.

Our Geelong builders created a street façade dominated by honed pewter block work walls, which serve to block out the harsh western sun and provide a sense of mystery.

Once inside the entry, the house opens up to the rear yard and leads to a spacious living room which features 3.6-metre-high ceilings. Large double-glazed sliding doors with highlight windows to 3.3m high extend the entire length of the north wall, allowing the sun to penetrate the full width of the living area.

Other features of the Minimal Hillside Home plan include:

  • a large island bench and walk-in pantry in the kitchen
  • a living room focused on both the view and open fireplace
  • an elevated eastern wing, with two children’s bedrooms, a rumpus room, bathroom, laundry and study area
  • a guest room, bathroom and large garage at the western end of the home
  • a self-contained wing off the entry, containing the master bedroom with ensuite and walk-in robe.
